The Mah Jongg Way

Air Force Officer Spouses Club Mah Jongg Clubs play by the Wright Patterson Rules.  The Wright Patterson AFB OWC published a green rule book many years ago that is used by the Mah Jongg Clubs at all the Air Force Bases.  The set up is almost the same as standard Mah Jongg, but the hands are very different and are in a book rather than on a card.  Players can use their books while playing so it isn't necessary to memorize all the hands!

History

During the 1920’s when Wright-Patterson AFB was still McCook Field, Mah Jongg players began to compile their own rules and hands based on the ancient Chinese game. The first edition of the rule book was the work of Sylva Bauer and Helene Morris. The basis of the current book has been the cumulative experience of 70 years of service-connected Mah Jongg players.

In 1963, Wright-Patterson rules were copyrighted to continue the process of standardization. Unlike international rules we do not allow the use of wild tiles/jokers.  These rules allow one to move from base to base and post to post and still play the same game.  In 2003 the rules were revised and 12 new hands added so that even the most expert player will be challenged.
